Banukai is a semi-legendary figure of Banuk lore. She was the chieftain of the first werak and the person from whom the tribe takes its name.
History[]
According to Banuk legend, she led her people in flight from the Ravenous Tribe. After a prophetic dream, she followed a star to a temple where she communed with the Blue Light. This meeting infused Banukai with its power over the machines but left her severely wounded. In order to patch herself up and retain the power within her, she threaded machine cables through her body. She then marched with the machines back to her camp which she found besieged by the Ravenous Tribe.
Banukai's charge alongside the machines rallied her werak and after a costly battle they defeated the Ravenous Tribe. Banukai herself was one of the casualties, and when she fell her tribe wept and the machines bowed as the Blue Light's power drifted from her body and rose into the sky.
Legacy[]
Banukai is remembered as the founder and namesake of the Banuk tribe. Her legend serves as the inspiration for much of the Banuk's spirituality, as well as the shamans' practice of sewing machine cables into their skin.
Trivia[]
- A shaman tells Banukai's story in Song's Edge, between the Bluegleam trader and Sekuli's scaffolding.
